1995 Brownie Guide Badge Book - Windsurfer Badge Stage 1

Notes:
* If you hold an RYA National Windsurfing scheme Level 1 or an RYA Junior Windsurfing Scheme Level 1 and complete Clause , you may have this badge.
* The tester for Clauses 2 to 5 should be an experienced windsurfer over the age of 16.  This person may also test Clause 1.
1) Swim 50m and stay afloat for five minutes wearing clothes.  This may be done in a swimming pool and you may wear a buoyancy aid if you wish.
2) Wear suitable clothing and a buoyancy aid.  Explain to the tester why these are important.
3) Carry and launch the board and rig separately and raise the rig (with assistance if required).
4) Sail the board across wind, upwind and downwind.  Do 180 degree turn, basic tacking and gybing.  Stop the board.
5) Dismantle the rig while afloat, roll it up and paddle back to shore.

* If you hold an RYA Junior Windsurfing Scheme Level 2 or an RYA National Windsurfing Scheme Level 2 and do Clause 1, you may have this badge.
* The tester for Clauses 2 to 8 should be an experienced windsurfer approved by the County Assistant Outdoor Activities Adviser (Boating).
1) Swim 50m and stay afloat for five minutes wearing clothes.  This may be done in a swimming pool and you may wear a buoyancy aid if you wish.
2) Wear suitable clothing and a buoyancy aid.  Be able to discuss your choice with the tester.
3) Name the main parts of the board.  Rig a board demonstrating the use of knots and a safety leash.
4) Show that you can, with assistance if required, launch the board and rig connected at the water's edge, get onto the board in shallow water and sail away, return to shore in control, and remove the board from the water.
5) Sailing a set triangular course in winds of at least 8 knots, show an awareness of the three basic 'rules of the road' and that you are competent in the following techniques:
a) steering using body weight and rig
b) altering the daggerboard
c) sail adjustment, board balance and trim
d) tacking
e) gybing.
6) Know, and if possible demonstrate, how to be towed by another windsurfer and by a safety boat.
7) Describe five methods of self rescue and demonstrate two.  Know the distress signal.
8) Be able to explain the 'seven common senses' and how you would choose a safe sailing area, taking into account cover wind direction, water state, tides, Beaufort scale and personal limitations.

* If you hold an RYA Junior Windsurfing Scheme Level 3 or an RYA National Windsurfing Scheme Level 3 and complete Clause 1, you may have this badge.
* The tester for Clauses 2 to 4 should be an RYA Windsurfing Instructor or hold a qualification approved by the County Assistant Outdoor Activities Adviser (Boating).  This person may also test Clauses 1 and 5.
1) Swim 50m and stay afloat for five minutes wearing clothes.  This may be done in a swimming pool and you may wear a buoyancy aid if you wish.
2) Present yourself for the test wearing suitable clothing and a buoyancy aid, and show that you can check whether equipment is safe and suitable.  Explain how you would choose a safe sailing area and show a knowledge of local conditions and hazards.
3) Demonstrate that you are competent in the following techniques:
Rigging
a) Rig various types of sail, with assistance if required, and know in which order to de-rig.
b) Know the types of harness line available
c) Know how to position and adjust harness lines.
d) Know the correct adjustment of footstraps.
Launching, Starting and Landing
e) Carry and launch a rig, assembled with assistance if required.
f) Beach start in stronger winds and control the board in shallows.
g) Uphaul a rig and start in stronger winds.
h) Come ashore under control and land in stronger winds.
i) Know how to care for equipment ashore and afloat.
Sailing Techniques and Stance
j) Demonstrate correct harness adjustment.
k) Hook in and out in stronger winds.
l) Know the efficient planning stance when hooked in.
m) Know the basic footstrap technique (getting in and out of at least one).
n) Know the beginnings of footsteering with daggerboard retracted.
o) Be aware of the purpose of a mast track and how to adjust it.
p) 'Rail' upwind.
Manoeuvres
q) Tack in stronger winds.
r) Gybe in stronger winds with daggerboard up.
Freestyle
s) Demonstrate three freestyle manoeuvres.
Rescue
t) Demonstrate being towed in stronger winds.
u) Know, and if possible demonstrate, how to row a board with rig and person.
4) Know how to deal with emergency situations - self-help and getting help.
5) Know how to recognise and deal with hypothermia.  Demonstrate how you would:
a) stop bleeding
b) identify and treat a broken bone
c) treat an unconscious breathing patient.
Using a manikin, show how to give expired air resuscitation.
