Leslie's historic UK Guide Badge Syllabuses

Subtitle

Senior Guides, soon to be Land Rangers, started in 1917.  From earliest days there were proficiency badges, made of white felt like the Guide Badges of the time, but with red ring round the central image rather than blue.

The initial badges were: Art Lover, Bookbinder, Booklover, Clerk, Finisher, Housekeeper, House Surveyor, Interpreter, Knitter, Leatherworker, Local Knowledge, Milkmaid, Motorist, Musician, Nature Lover, Signaller, Textile Weaver.

In 1923 they switched to dark navy or black felt, as it was easier to keep clean - and to all of the badge embroidery being done in red thread not just the outer ring.

The badges were: Art Lover, Architect & Town Planner, Braille, Bookbinder, Booklover, Campcraft, Citizen, Choral Patrol, Decoder, Finisher, Housecraft, Housekeeper, House Surveyor, Instructor, International Knowledge, Interpreter, Knitter, Leatherworker, Local Knowledge, Mariner, Milkmaid, Milliner, Minstrel, Motorist, Musician, Nature Lover, Probationer, Public Health, Rescuer, Scribe, Signaller, Skater, Textile Weaver, Toycraft, Surveyor, World Citizen

From 1930 to c1943, the felt badges were replaced by woven badges with bound edges, which were much more durable than felt.  In around 1943 all of the proficiency badges were done away with, and replaced by bar badges.  Some of the badges below only launched in 1939 - and with the interruption of the war, and the pressure of War Work, they may have been produced in small numbers only.

The badges were: Ability, Air Mechanic, Art Lover, Architect & Town Planner, Astronomer, Author, Beauty Lover, Bellringer, Braille, Bookbinder, Booklover, Campcraft, Citizen, Commonwealth & Empire, Choral Patrol, Current Events, Decoder, Finisher, First Aid, History Student, Home Emergency Service, Housecraft, Housekeeper, House Surveyor, Instructor, International Knowledge, Interpreter, Knitter, Leatherworker, Local Knowledge, Mariner, Milkmaid, Minstrel, Motorist, Musician, Nature Lover, Printer, Probationer, Public Health, Rescuer, Samaritan, Scribe, Sea Lore, Signaller, Skater, Surveyor, Textile Weaver, Toycraft, Water Naturalist, World Citizen.

In July 2018 a new set of interest badges was introduced, linked to the themes in the new programme.  The badges were:
