Must be able to drive, start and stop a car; fill up the oil, petrol and water tanks; flood the carburetor, take out and replace the sparking plug, and adjust the brakes.

Put on a Stepney or detachable wheel, and have a general idea of the working of the engine; clean the car.

Know the rules of the road and how to read the maps.
