To perform selected exercises in Ju-jitsu and Swedish and double tensing; 

Jump at least 3 feet high and three feet long, or able to vault a bar; 

Climb an upright pole or rope, 15 feet

(unless any of above objected to by doctor);

And show ability to instruct.

1920 (March) Girl Guide Badges and How to Win Them 1st edition - Gymnast Badge

A Guide must be able:
To jump 2 ft. 6 ins. or 3ft. high (according to age) off either foot without a springboard.
To jump 6 ft. or 9 ft. (according to age).
To perform a suitable table of physical exercises taken from a Swedish or Board of Education Syllabus.
To climb a pole or rope at least 15 ft. high.
To do one of the following six alternatives: 
1) To do three vaults on a vaulting horse, either front, flank, squat or rear in good style and from either side of the horse.
2) To do three vaults with bars, either front, rear gate, fence or jumping between the bars.
3) To do three exercises on the parallel or horizontal bars.
4) To do three exercises in rack climbing.
5) To do three vaults or jumps on forms, kangaroo jump, front vault, squat, frog or rabbit jumps.
6) To do three exercises where there is no support or where no apparatus at all is used.  Such as: somersault (on ground or mat), back-lying, back-lying following somersault, leapfrog, fireman's lift.

1921 POR - Gymnast Badge


Be able to ump 2ft 6in or 3ft (according to age) off either foot, without a springboard.

Be able to jump 6ft or 9ft long (according to age).

4) Be able to climb a rope in good style.

5) Be able to walk along a balance bar with good posture at hip height.

6) Be able to do either: 

a) Sideways travelling along a bar; or

b) Somersaults over and back between two ropes.

7) Be able to do three of the following, one from each section: 

a) Horse.  Quick squat, slow squat, knee spring.

b) Box.  Bunny vault, fence vault.

c) Somersault. (on mat).  Cartwheel.


16 Years and Over.

1) Have a good upright carriage and walk and run well.

2) Perform to command a table of free-standing exercises.  (This may be according to the Swedish or British system, and may include exercises with club-swinging.

3) Be able to jump 3ft. 3in. in good style.

4) Be able to climb a rope in good style.

5) Be able to walk along a balance bar with good posture at hip height, and do one exercise standing on the bar.

6) be able to do one of the following: 

a) Backward travelling (bar).

b) Rotary travelling (bar)

c) Under and over somersaults (bar)

7) Be able to do three of the following, one from each section; 

a) Horse.  Screw, flank, backward squat.

b) Box.  Fence, front, long fly.

c) Handstand (with support), cartwheel.


N.B. - Guides who qualify for this badge under 16 years old must take it again after they are 16 years if they wish to hold it.  The examiner should be a qualified gymnast, and whenever possible a woman.

1938 POR - Gymnast Badge


Guides should not enter for this badge unless they have been taught by a trained gymnast.

Under 16

1) Have a good upright carriage and walk and run well.

2) Perform to command a table of free-standing exercises. (This may be according to Swedish or British system.)

3) Be able to jump 3 feet high in good style.

4) Be able to walk along the narrow side of a balancing form or bar, both forward and backward with good posture.

5) Do three of the following in good style: 

a) Climb a rope at least 14 feet.

b) Somersault through and back between two ropes.

c) Hand stand against a wall.

d) Reverse hanging on wall bars or improvised apparatus.

e) Under and over somersault on bar or improvised apparatus.

f) Sideways travelling on bar.

6. Do three of the following in good style:

a) Cartwheel on right and left hand.

b) Through vault (i.e. squat).

c) Leap frog over high back.

d) Wolf or Jack-in-the-box.

e) Bunny vault over box or two forms.


Over 16

1) Have a good upright carriage and walk and run well.

2) Be attending gymnastic classes at school or some other approved physical training centre at least once a week.

3) Perform a table of free standing exercises approved by the examiner.

4) Perform two of the following in good style on the narrow side of a balancing form or bar:

a) Walk forward, throwing and catching a ball at every step.

b) Walk sideways without support.

c) Stand on form, lift arms and right leg sideways, replace, step forward and repeat, raising other leg.

d) Walk with knees full bend and stretch every third step.

5) Perform one of the following groups: 

a) Climb a rope at least 16 feet.  Travel sideways on bar or wall bars both ways; 

or Travel backwards on bar.

b) Hand stand unsupported; 

or Under and over somersault on bar or improvised apparatus;

or Reverse hanging vertically between two ropes.

1939 POR - Gymnast Badge

Guides should not enter for this badge unless they have been taught by a qualified woman teacher of physical education.

The tester should always be a qualified woman specialist.

1) Have an easy carriage and move well.

2) Perform a group of exercises showing agility, trunk, abdominal and balance work with or without use of apparatus, and perform six agilities or vaults in good style, showing a variety of choice, using portable or fixed apparatus; or

Perform a group of exercises (using small and portable or fixed apparatus) showing varieties of speed, degrees of strength, changes of direction and use of space.

1957 POR - Gymnast Badge


1) Have an easy carriage and move well.

2) Perform a group of exercises, with or without apparatus, showing agility, balance, trunk and abdominal work.  Perform in good style, using fixed or portable apparatus, agilities or vaults showing a variety of choice.  Perform a group of exercises, using small and portable or fixed apparatus,  showing varieties of speed, degrees of strength, changes of direction and use of space.

2) Using a box at its full height, with mats at three sides, show balanced arrival on a definite part of the body, on the box; transfer the body weight to other parts of the body and select own method of arrival on any of the mats.

Note: The tester and the instructor must be qualified.

Moving on, across, and off the floor, perform a sequence of at least six linked movements showing balance, flight, and resilience.  During the sequence different parts of your body must come in contact with the floor and be used to support your body weight and there must be a change of speed and direction during the sequence.

Apparatus Work: 

1) On a combination of two beams, one at your hip height, the other just above your head height, beginning and ending with feet on the floor, perform a sequence of movements to illustrate bending, stretching, and twisting.  (Your body must at some time go over the top beam.  Even if the movement begins at one end of the beams it need not necessarily reach the other.)

2) Using a box at full height, with mats at three sides, show balanced arrival on a definite part of your body on the box; transfer your body weight to other parts of your body and select your own method of arrival on any of the mats.
