1989 Guide Badge Book - Care Of The Elderly Badge


1) Find out what facilities and organisations are available in your District for elderly people, e.g. residential homes, clubs, day centres, Help the Aged, W.R.V.S., Meals on Wheels etc.  Find out about one of these in detail.

2) Be able to tell the tester about one of the following:

a) What are the causes and signs of hypothermia in an old person are.

b) How to summon help for an old person who has fallen or is unwell.

c) What self aids are available, e.g. long reachers, bath aids, etc.

3) With the assistance of the Guider, arrange to meet the person in charge of a day centre or residential home or club for elderly people, and discuss with her any help you can give to those present, e.g. serving tea, arranging florwers, talking to residents about the past or other topics, taking an activity or game with a group, carrying out some task for them.  Carry this out on four occasions perhaps taking members of your Patrol along as well.

4) At your test tell the tester how you have helped elderly people during your visits and anything you have learned from them.
