1989 Guide Badge Book - Camper Advanced Badge


1) Bring to the test a certificate from a Guider (qualified camper) with whom you have camped stating that you have proved yourself to be useful and reliable and recommending you as a candidate for the badge.

2) Have camped as a Guide at least twice and have spent not less than seven nights in Guide camps.

3) Know how to:

a) Pitch, air and strike a tent.

b) Erect, strike and pack up the screening and poles or cubicles used in your own Unit or District.

4) Understand the care in all weathers of tents, groundsheets, bedding and latrines.  KNow how to carry out emergency repairs to a tent.

5) Make a gadget or gadgets using at least two lashings: e.g. square, tripod or snake.

6) a) Show how to construct a fireplace for cooking: collect and stack suitable firing.

b) Have a knowledge of portable cooking stoves used in your own Unit or District and know the safety precautions necessary when using them.

c) Light a wood fire out of doors and cook a meal on it, showing a variety of methods of cooking, e.g. frying, stewing, boiling.

7) Understand: 

a) How to store good including bread, butter, milk and meat.

b) How to dispose of all kinds of refuse.

The tester must hold the Camper's Licence or be an experienced camper.

The person testing this badge should be an experienced camper and/or hold a Guide camp licence.
To do this bade you must have already been to wo or more Guide camps.  Altogether you must have spent at least six nights in a Guide camp.
Shelter
1) Take part in putting up two types of tent.
2) Know how to make simple tent repairs.
Personal Kit
Either
1) Demonstrate how to pack your bag/rucksack so that it is easy to find things and your kit stays dry.
Or
2) Know what clothes you need for different kids of weather.  Demonstrate that you are prepared to get out of bed in the middle of the night (eg wellies, coat, torch, etc).
Or
3) Know how to take care of your bedding and how to store it during the day so that it stays dry.
Food and Drink
Do two of the following:
1) Demonstrate two methods of cooking a meal out of doors, eg barbecue, Gaz stove, trangia stove, wood fire.
2) Show how to store safely all groceries including bread, milk, meat, sugar and sweets.
3) Know where to collect drinking water and how to store it.
Hygiene
Either
1) If the camp is using toilet tents:
Help to put the tent up and equip it with latrine, gadget for handwashing etc and be responsible for at least one duty of helping to keep the toilet tent and surrounding washing area clean and tidy.
Or
2) If the camp is using toilet blocks:
Be respsonsible for at least one duty of cleaning and tidying the whole block and restocking as necessary.
Other campers
Either
1) Be responsible for showing a first-time camper the routines of camp.
Or
2) Keep a record of what your patrol did at camp and use this to show the tester what was good about the camp.
Environment
Either 
1) Suggest two ways you can take care of the environment at camp.
Or
2) Find something in nature that inspires you and talk to the tester about it.
