Be able to jump 2 ft. 6 in., or 3 ft. (according to age and build) in good style, and with attention to landing.

Have a natural, upright carriage, and be able to walk and run well.

Show proficiency in three of the following: Relay racing; roller or ice skating; ball throwing; jumping the bag; ring catching; balancing (on a plank or rail).

Must have performed daily breathing exercises for two months.

A Guide must aim at attaining the standard measurements for a girl of her age.

1920 (March) Girl Guide Badges and How to Win Them 1st edition - Athlete Badge

1925 Girl Guide Badges and How to Win Them 8th edition - Athlete Badge

1) Have an easy upright carriage and be able to walk and run well.
2) Be able to do the following in good style: 
Running high jump 3ft 4in.
Standing long jump 4ft.
Running long jump 8ft.
3) Skip for two minutes with not less than eight different steps.
4) Throw a hard ball (over hand) to pitch at 30 yards.
5) Run a hundred yards in 14 seconds.
6) Must have performed daily breathing exercises for two months.  A Guide must aim at attaining the standard measurements for a girl of her age.

5) Jump 3 feet in height with a good style (stick should be used) or run 100 yards in 15 seconds.

6) Skip (a) for one minute continuously; (b) showing four steps accurately, not necessarily continuously.

7) Take a three-mile walk in 1 1/4 hours and arrive back in good condition; or Follow up a half-mile track in reasonable time.

The test for Guides over 16 years would be altered in:

3) Length of throw, 85 feet.  5) Height of jump, 3ft. 4in.  Time for 100 yards, 13 seconds.  6) Skipping (b) show six steps.  7) Walk four miles in 1 1/2 hours.

(N.B. Guides who qualify for this badge before they are 16 years old must take the test again after they are 1 if they wish to hold it.)

1938 POR - Athlete Badge


1) Have an easy, upright carriage and be able to walk and run well.

2) Show proficiency in two of the following, and a knowledge of the rules, one to be taken from each group: 

a) Rounders, tennis, cricket, badminton, stoolball, golf.

b) Hockey, lacrosse, netball (or basket ball), "Touch and Pass".

(N.B. Swimming (30 yards in 24 secs., knowledge of two strokes, able to dive, may be substituted for any one game in Group (a).

3) Throw a cricket or rounders ball in good style 75 feet.

3) Guides who will be under 15 years old on 1st September of the year they enter for the badge must do one of the following:

a) Run 100 yards in 13.9 seconds.

b) Run 150 yards in 21.3 seconds.

c) Rn 80 yards over hurdles (8 flights of 2 feet 6 inches) in 15.5 seconds.

Guides who will be 15 years old on 1st September in the year they enter for the badge must do one of the following:

d) Run 100 yards in 13.9 seconds.

e) Run 150 yards in 21.3 seconds

f) Run 880 yards in 2 minutes 54 seconds.

g) Run 80 metres over hurdles (8 flights of 2 feet 6 inches) in 16.2 seconds.

4) Do one of the following: 

a) Long jump 12 feet 6 inches.

b) High jump 4 feet.

5) Do one of the following:

a) Throw a discus 71 feet.

b) Throw a javelin 64 feet.

c) Throw a hard ball 110 feet.

d) Throw a weight (7lb) 25 feet.

1) Demonstrate the warming up activities used for the chosen athletic events.  these should include strengthening and mobility exercises.

2) Do three of the following events, of which one must be a track event and one a field event.  The third may be either.

a) 100m - U13 15.9 secs, U14 15.2 secs, U15 14.7 secs, U16 14.5 secs.

b) 200m - U13 33.5 secs, U14 32.5 secs, U15 31.5 secs, U16 30.7 secs.

You should do this on grass in a park or playing field, and only go on the road if there is nowhere else.  Several Guides should go together.

Note: i) Your age should be reckoned to 1st September in the year you take the badge.

1) Know the safety rules which apply to the events listed in clause 2.

Before the test:

2) Select six events from the following list, two from each section:

a) 100 m, 200 m, 800 m, 1500 m.

b) Hurdles, high jump, long jump.

c) Discus, javelin, shot (for those under 13 years only) rounders ball.

3) Choose three of the six event selected for clause 2; one must be a field event and one a track event.  The third may be either.

Tell the tester which events you have chosen and what your best performances are.  For not less than six weeks, show progress in your chosen events and keep a record of your performances.

At the test: 

4) a) Demonstrate the warming-up activities and other exercises used for your chosen events.

b) Demonstrate your three events chosen for clause 3.

c) Discuss with the tester the progress you made in these events during the six weeks of clause 3.
